Hard Rock Hotel Penang

Infused with the Hard Rock spirit amidst a beach suburb known for its Peranakan culture, the hotel seamlessly blends modernity with heritage and a relaxed beachy atmosphere. The naturally ventilated lobby fosters an open, airy ambiance, with the pool adjacent, separated by clear glass railing to blend indoor and outdoor environments.

Drawing on the hotel’s unique features, our lobby design embraces the concept of ‘Complementary’ by blending modern and heritage, beach and city aesthetics. Contrasting elements harmonize through color, material, form, and style, creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Nature and heritage elements include a rainwood wall at Concierge, blue-green sukabumi tiles, red and floral-patterned pillow fabric reflecting Peranakan colors, and an overall earthy tone. Modern and city elements comprise a corridor mirror ceiling reflecting the pool for a sense of endlessness, an infinity-mirror light feature for a high ceiling illusion, and a guitar-shaped acoustic panel ceiling with linear lights. The layout predominantly features organic shapes to facilitate smooth pathways.

The original building structure had to be preserved hence creativity is very much limited by existing columns, beam height, and service pipes locations. Space planning focused on improving traffic flow efficiency by concealing columns inside functional space. Ceiling height is constrained too because relocating major service pipes was impossible due to ongoing hotel operations. Inaccurate original plans meant hidden structures and service pipes were only discovered during demolition.
