From Ruin to Rad
Ruin bars are built in abandoned or ancient buildings, stores or lots, and have been popular since the founding of Szimpla Kert in Budapest. Housed in a pre-war building, Neighbourhood Ruin Bar is the first ruin bar in Penang.
Neighbourhood Ruin Bar is housed in an abandoned pre-war building, thus the design strategy was to leverage on its ancient history and character. To effectively bring across this story, the interior walls and beams are left raw and untouched with exposed brick work. Antique furnitures, old-school tiles and old vehicles are recycled and tastefully reused. The opening in the attic allows natural light to flow seamlessly into the space, eschewing the need for additional lights during daytime, besides adding to the overall ‘ruined’ feel. During night time, bright neon lights and dreamy string lights work together to complement an exciting atmosphere amidst the ruins.
